Eilan Nam Ailur, the Silver Isle

The Magic of the Silver Isle

The Silver Isle is a Prime Material island inhabited by the spirit of a similar isle, called Aleadryn Tel Quessir, which was hidden in the deep elven forests of Arvandor, in the Outer Plane of Arborea. The kaganesti elf Lanalier of the Vigilar sacrificed her life to form a planar link that allowed the spirit of Aleadryn Tel Quessir to merge with the island that then became the Silver Isle. Whether Aleadryn Tel Quessir still exists on Arborea, or whether it vanished when its essence transported itself to the Silver Isle, is unknown. Some say that the Silver Isle is Aleadryn Tel Quessir, and that one day it will vanish back to Arvandor with all those who dwell upon it.

Due to its nature, the power of Arborea permeates the Silver Isle. The Silver Isle is imbued with the magic of the Seldarine in a manner reminiscent of the Isle of Evermeet on Toril. Unlike Evermeet, the Silver Isle is primarily dedicated to one of the elven deities: Sehanine Moonbow, the lady of the moon and stars, mistress of mists and divination. It is Sehanine's power which permeates the Silver Isle, and her blessing which renders the island more receptive to enchantment, illusion, and divination magics, and less receptive to more direct forms of magic. It is Sehanine's power which defends the Silver Isle.

The hostile forces of the Dark God constantly probe the island's defenses. With the blessing of Sehanine Moonbow and the power of the Crown of the Eladrin, powerful illusions cloak the outer shore of the Lake of Tears and mists shroud the lake itself, making it nearly impossible to find one's way to the shores of the island unless invited. The magics of the Mother Tree and the island itself blunt the harsh storms of the Blacklands, and maintain a gentle climate year round. Finally, the life magic of the island help it to resist the corrupting effects of Entropy and his minions.

Near the end of 1372 DR, a small population of high elves and a smattering of sylvan elves began the process of building the Isle's future society. Small groups of sea elves also began to appear along the shore of the island, arriving with their allies by some mysterious means.

It was not until late in 1373 DR, however, that the Isle truly began serving its intended purpose as an elven homeland. Elven and human forces based in Caer Trildane embarked on a war to cut a 20 mile-wide swath through the Blacklands between the Silver Isle and the lands of eastern Aelfir. The Blacklands was weakened at the time, still recovering from the defeat of the Army of Darkness and the unleashing of the First Word. More importantly, much of the Blacklands' remaining energies had been gathered and focussed into three great sites of power by yugoloth agents. These agents were hoping to project the Blacklands' evil energies into the Outer Planes as part of a larger yugoloth plot to turn the Great Ring towards evil. The Blacklands' energies were never projected because the yugoloth plot failed, but during their focussing, the Blacklands as a whole were severely weakened and distracted.

The allied human and elven armies managed to complete their corridor through the weakened Blacklands in the 11th month of 1373 DR, just before the three sites of gathered power dissolved, releasing the Blacklands' dark energies back into the land.

The corridor of cleansed land, covered in young Seeds of Persephone, is called the Corridor of Friendship in honor of the alliance between elves and humans that created it. It is guarded vigorously by elven forces, and has permitted thousands of elves to make the journey from the western lands to the Silver Isle.

The Great Tree of Life

Imbued with the living soul of the kaganesti elf Velduran, sister to Lanalier, the Mother Tree of Eilan Nam Ailur draws magical power directly from the life forces of the island itself, channeling this power to help protect and sustain the island. Though much of its power is subtle and impossible to quantify, the following is a list of those powers which are known:

The Wand of Othea

The First and possibly the most powerful of the three artifacts bound to the isle during its first moments, this gift of the giant goddess of fertility and abundance appears to be a small, gnarled branch. It helps sustain the life force of the island against Entropy, and was dedicated to the island by the death of the wood giant Fjellvar, in honor of the green elf friendship with the voadkyn. The wand imposes a harsh restriction on the island, requiring that no blood of a mortal creature be shed within the confines of the Isle. Any creature which violates this restriction finds itself driven from the island under the power of a potent geas, and these violators may never return. Thus, all inhabitants of the Isle, including predators, eat only vegetables, roots, and fruits. Nonetheless, all creatures seem to draw the necessary sustenance from this plant life, and the fauna of the isle grows hale and healthy. It is said that the wand will not whither until the last living wild elf upon Eldreth forgets the past and gives up the forest as his home.

The Crown of the Eladrin

Granted by the Eladrin, this silver tiara strengthens Sehanine's veils around the island, making them nearly impossible to disbelieve or penetrate with divination magics. However, because of the power of this effect, no mortal magic at all can pierce illusions anywhere upon the Isle or its surrounding lake, making the Isle a place of great mystery and hidden truth. In addition to this price, the Crown imposes a second and harsher price. As time passes, and the elves gain insights into the deeper mysteries of magic and knowledge, they must take up some of the burden that the Eladrin hold, and create for others that same mystery and wonder which the Eladrin once crafted with such exquisite patience and care. This will slowly reduce the Eladrin presence on Eldreth, until the folk of Arborea visit but rarely, if at all.

The Grey Sword of Titania

A dull grey blade, this object of power breaks all binding enchantments that hinder a person's freedom of thought and action. This includes Emotion Control, Fear, Hold, Charm, Suggestion, and Domination type powers, as well as all similar effects. However, like all fey gifts, the sword cuts both ways. Even friendly or beneficial magics of this sort, such as Charms and Suggestions to win over one's friends, fail to function. There exists only one exception to this power: When defending this very freedom, all inhabitants of the island gain the effects of a Courage or Hope spell (whichever is more appropriate). The power of the sword particularly focuses on powerful individuals who seek control over others.
