This sphere contains no planets. Rather, the entire area is filled with breathable air, and large chunks of asteroid-sized, green, pourous masses of flora floating through it. Among this paradise fly the Kra'aken, a race of ethereal, almost angelic, telepathic beings who are thoroughly pacifist.
The asteroids do in fact have a solid rock core (though not very dense nor rich in mineral wealth), but are covered by thick carpets of plant matter. The asteroids all appear to be civilized and tame, but are generally only lightly (but evenly) populated. Some Kra'aken cities do exist, but are relatively rare and not heavily populated either.
The Kra'aken, tall, ethereal winged beings, are powerful telepaths, and many boast significant telepathic abilities. Though such abilities are extremely rare, some even have the capacity to open wormholes or other portals to neighboring spheres, and other Kra'aken (especially the more philosophic elders) have other abilities. The Kra'aken can easily communicate with their own race across vast distances (not across an entire sphere, nor across spheres save in rare instances, but usually across several thousand miles).
The Kra'aken are great artists, though their sensibilities differ vastly from the zelani. The Kra'aken admire refinement and delicacy, even more so than most elves. They have a great respect for life, and do not harm others. During the Vodoni occupation (prior to the destruction of the Eye of the Gods), they submitted to the Vodoni "as a reed bends in the wind", and thus avoided the worst of the Vodoni's wrath. Instead, the Vodoni exacted heavy tribute on the mineral and gem poor kra'aken, forcing the friendly race to engage in trade to meet these demands. The Kra'aken are very proficient traders and explorers, and have conducted trade with Vodonikaspace and zelanispace for many years. Many have even ventured farther afield to investigate the Known Spheres and travel therein. The Vodoni did not typically restrict such travel, raising the prospect that the Vodoni used the kra'aken as unwitting spies.
Late in 1373 DR, the Vodoni occupation of kra'akenspace came to an abrupt end. Within hours after the destruction of the Eye of the Gods, a powerful psychic wave drove out all of the invaders, almost entirely without bloodshed. Afterwards, the kra-aken let it be known that they would no longer tolerate hostile intrusions into their sphere.
In spite of the kra'aken's demonstration of their willingness to take control of their own destiny, the kra'aken still suffer from one horrific legacy of the Vodoni occupation. It is a great shame to them, and something they rarely talk about - and never with outsiders.
After years of experimentation, the Vodoni have mastered a process which transforms Kra'aken into Kra'sadar, twisted and evil telepathic creatures which lust for pain and the suffering of others. Only one in a thousand Kra'aken survive this transformation, however, limiting the numbers of the Kra'sadar severely. No one knows how many kra'sadar exist in the Vodoni's service, or within kra'akenspace itself. No one even understands the extend of their abilities.
When no threatened, the kra'aken typically greet visitors with great curiosity and little if any fear. They are extremely eager to learn about places outside their sphere, and openly share information. They appear not to conceal information of any sort, and gladly chat about most topics. The sole exception to this are the kra'Sadar, which are taboo and never discussed.
As noted above, the kra'aken are a very forgiving and likeable people, not easily moved to anger or aggression, and quite willing to share knowledge - any knowledge - freely. They even willingly share information about their crafts - notably weaving, carving, plant shaping, and horticulture - with outsiders, asking relatively little in return. When conducting trade, visitors find that precious metals go a long way due to their scarcity in the sphere. In exchange for minerals and worked tools, merchants bargain for a great wealth of medicinal and industrial herbs that exist nowhere else in the known universe. To supplement their weaving, the kra'aken also keep tame caterpillars as "pets", but do not sell these pets because of their emotion attachment to them. These caterpillars produce great quantities of silk which the Kra'aken weave into their delicate garments.
The kra'aken are a religious people, and their religion survived
almost entirely intact throughout the Vodoni occupation.
While the zelani gods were destroyed by Vulkaran, the kra'aken
gods submitted and avoided destruction. While the zelani then
turned to worshipping the Crystal King, feeding the Eye of
the Gods power, the kra'aken always paid homage to their strange
triad pantheon: the Mother, the Father, and the Child.
The Mother represents fertility and growth, the Father skill and
wisdom, and the Child curiosity, exploration and innocence. The
Child, oddly enough, has the pre-eminent position among the majority
of Kra'aken, while the Mother and Father appeal to mothers and elders.
The location of this pantheon, prime or outer planar,
remains unknown. Though this portrayal of mother and father
suggests sexuality, little is actually known at this
time about Kra'aken reproduction.
